Lobuche Peak, 6119 meters (from mid-October to beginning of November 2014)

Lobuche Peak, 6119 meters, is situated in the famous Everest region, the Khumbu. The WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS' team was since mid-October exploring the different valleys of such beautiful and astonish region of the Himalaya discovering the highest peaks of the World.

About five hundred years ago there was fighting in Kham, in eastern Tibet, and many refugees fled. A few families went to the region north of Mount Everest, and then over the Nangpa La, the high pass east of Everest, down into the valleys of Khumbu in Nepal. Those families were the first Sherpas.
Khumbu was three parallel glacial valleys. It was frontier territory. Sometimes the Sherpas effectively had independence, and sometimes they were controlled by Tibetan or Nepali government appointees. After the 1865 border war between Nepal and Tibet, Nepal became, and remained, the power in Khumbu.

The Sherpas grew barley and buckwheat, the traditional high-altitude crops of Tibet. In Summer they took their yaks and naks (the female) to the high pastures in the upper valleys. These days, the families that do not run a lodge (typical mountain hostel) are living from the income of a family climbing Sherpa, and their own culture of potatoes.
Most of the earlier climbing Sherpas who were hired for the first expeditions came either from the Khumbu region, or from the east of Nepal, the region of the third highest peak of the World: the Kanchenjunga, 8586 meters. Nowadays this remains still the same: the strongest Sherpas coming from such regions.

We have started our trip with a memorable flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the most dangerous airport in the World according to a specific classification of airports in the World. Welcome to the famous Everest region with its numerous lodges, its impressive yaks that are transporting the tourists or locals' material on the narrow paths through the different valleys and last but not least the stunning and fantastic giants of the Himalaya, which are all above 6000 meters and covered the all year with snow and hanging glaciers. It was such a good feeling to be back again to the mountains after the few rest days in Kathmandu, coming back from the Shishapangma (8013m) expedition!
The acclimatization process was going well for all of us so that we have arrived in accordance to our schedule at Lobuche high camp. The tents were set up besides a small mountain lake in front of the beautiful pyramid of Ama Dablam, the Matterhorn of Nepal, 6856 meters. The campsite is gorgeous. We have started our climb early in the morning and after a few hours we stood on the top of Lobuche Peak at 6119 meters with an amazing 360 degrees panorama, with the highest summit of the World, the Mount Everest, straight in front of us. What a nice feeling full of respect towards this splendid environnment.

We enjoyed the days back to Lukla with discovering numerous off-track ways, being just alone in the middle of this stunning landscape, except the wild animals we had the chance to see.
